Valentine's Day Colors

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, there are two colors that always come to mind: red and pink. But do you know why these colors are associated with love? Let's explore the meaning of pink and red and why they are often used as Valentine’s Day colors. We will also take a look at some famous examples of these colors being used in relation to love!

Colors of Love

The color red has symbolized passion, desire, and love for centuries. Since its origin, red dye was very difficult and expensive to get, so it became a favorite color for the rich. In France, it became a favorite color for the aristocracy and in Japan and Italy it was associated with luxury and royalty.

This connection to love is part of why some countries, including China and India, encourage brides to wear red to their weddings. In these cultures, red is connected to prosperity, love, and fertility.

Greek mythology states the red rose was dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Aphrodite was running towards her lover, Adonis and pricked her foot on a white rose and stained the flower with her blood. This was said to be the first red rose ever to appear on Earth.

Of course, one of the more simple reasons red is connected to love (and to St. Valentine’s Day) is the fact that it’s the same color of blood and of the heart.

Cara & The Sky

Pink is a combination of red and white. White represents purity and when mixed with the fiery passion of red, it reveals a softer kind of love in the color pink. This feminine shade has been used as a symbol of romantic love for many years. In fact, during the Victorian era, only young ladies who were considered pure could wear pink!

Because pink is associated with a love that is more innocent and pure, it is a popular color choice for wedding attire in modern times. If looking for the right dress to to wear for a day of celebrating love, you can't go wrong with pink.

All of these fascinating examples highlight why red and pink have become the iconic and symbolic colors associated with love and passion throughout history.
